Online checkout works differently than swiping a card in a store. Here's what you need to know before you try to use your gift card on any website.
Using a closed-loop gift card online is usually straightforward. At checkout, you'll find a field labeled "gift card," "promo code," or "store credit." Enter the card number and PIN (if required) and the balance applies to your order.
Open-loop prepaid cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) work differently. They're entered as a regular payment method in the credit card section of checkout. You'll need the card number, expiration date, and CVV code from the back.
One important step with open-loop cards: register a billing address. Many online merchants verify the billing address against what's on file with the card issuer. Without a registered address, your transaction may be declined even if you have sufficient funds.
This is the most commonly overlooked step and the most common reason online gift card transactions fail.
Look for a "register your card" or "manage my card" link on the card issuer's website. The URL is usually printed on the back of the card or on the packaging.
You'll need the card number, expiration date, and CVV. Some issuers also ask for the original purchase amount for verification purposes.
Enter the billing address you want associated with the card. This is the address you'll enter during online checkout when prompted for a billing address.
When checking out online, enter the exact same address you registered. Even small differences (abbreviating "Street" as "St") can cause a verification failure.
This happens often. Your card has $23.47 left and your order is $40. What do you do?
For closed-loop cards, most retailer websites allow you to apply the gift card balance and then pay the remainder with a credit or debit card. Look for a "split payment" or "add another payment method" option.
For open-loop cards, the process is trickier. Many merchants don't support split payments across two cards. In that case, you have two options:
Some online platforms like Amazon allow you to apply an open-loop prepaid card by adding it as a payment method and then selecting a primary payment method for any remaining amount.
The address you entered at checkout doesn't match the registered address on file with the card issuer. Re-check the exact format you used when registering the card.
The card balance is lower than the total including tax and shipping. Check your balance before attempting the transaction and ensure you're accounting for all charges.
New cards sometimes have a short activation delay. If you just purchased the card, wait 24 hours before using it online. This is especially common with open-loop cards.
Many prepaid gift cards are restricted to US merchants. If the website is based outside the US or processes payments through a foreign entity, the card may be declined.
Some open-loop cards restrict certain merchant categories. Cards marketed specifically for retail purchases may not work for digital downloads, gambling, or certain subscription services.
