Gift card balance check: 4 methods that always work

Whether you have a giftcardmall/mygift card, a retail store card, or a prepaid Visa — here is exactly how to check your balance in under 5 minutes using any of four proven methods.

4 Methods

Choose the gift card balance check method that works for you

Every US prepaid gift card must provide at least one free way to check your balance. Here are the four standard methods and when to use each one.

Online Balance Check

Best for: open-loop cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex). Visit the card issuer's website — the URL is printed on the back of the card. Enter your 16-digit card number, expiration date, and CVV. The page will display your current balance and a recent transaction list.

Always use the URL printed on the card, not a search engine result, to avoid phishing sites.

Phone Balance Check

Best for: any card type, no internet needed. Call the toll-free number on the back of the card. The automated system will ask you to enter the card number using your keypad, then read back your balance. Available 24/7, even when websites are down.

Have the card in hand when you call — the system will prompt for the full 16-digit number.

In-Store Balance Check

Best for: closed-loop retail gift cards. Any cashier at the issuing retailer can check your balance at the register without making a purchase. Some stores also have self-service kiosks near customer service that can read card balances.

This only works at the specific retailer that issued the card — not at other stores.

Receipt Balance Check

Best for: regular in-store users. Many retailers automatically print your remaining gift card balance at the bottom of your receipt after each transaction. This is the fastest passive method if you use the card regularly at physical stores.

Keep recent receipts until you've confirmed the balance matches the issuer's website.

Step by Step

How to perform a gift card balance check online

The online method works for giftcardmall/mygift cards and any open-loop prepaid card. Follow these four steps.

01

Locate the balance check URL

Flip your card over. The issuer's website and a toll-free phone number are printed on the back. For giftcardmall/mygift cards, the URL is also on the card packaging.

02

Enter your card details

You'll need the 16-digit card number, expiration date, and the 3-digit CVV or PIN from the back of the card. Some issuers only require the card number and last 4 digits.

03

View balance and history

The page displays your current balance and a list of recent transactions. Review the transaction history to understand any unexpected deductions — including inactivity fees.

04

Record your balance

Write down or screenshot the balance and the date. If the balance is lower than expected, check federal rules — inactivity fees can only be charged after 12 consecutive months of no use.

Why your balance might be lower than expected

A lower-than-expected balance after a gift card balance check almost always has one of four explanations. None of them require you to accept the loss — several have remedies under federal law.

Pending authorization hold. A recent transaction may have placed a temporary hold that hasn't settled yet. Holds typically clear within 3–5 business days.
Inactivity fee. After 12 consecutive months of no use, issuers may charge one fee per month. If fees were charged before the 12-month mark, that violates the CARD Act.
Undisclosed fee. Any fee that was not disclosed on the card or packaging before purchase is a potential CARD Act violation. File a complaint with the CFPB.
Unauthorized use. If you see a transaction you didn't make, contact the card issuer immediately. Open-loop cards issued by banks may have fraud protections similar to debit cards.

Your Rights

Federal law governs what issuers can deduct from your balance

The Credit CARD Act of 2009 limits what gift card issuers can charge and when. These rules apply to every US prepaid gift card — including giftcardmall/mygift cards — regardless of what the card packaging says.

  • Funds cannot expire within 5 years of purchase or last load
  • Inactivity fees only legal after 12 consecutive months of no use
  • Only one inactivity fee per month is permitted
  • All fees must be disclosed before purchase
  • Expired card with remaining balance must be replaced at no charge

Common Questions

Gift card balance check: frequently asked questions

Flip your card over and find the website or toll-free number printed on the back. Enter your 16-digit card number and CVV on the balance-check page, or follow the automated phone prompts, to see your current balance and transaction history.

Yes. Most gift card balance check systems only require your card number and CVV — registration is optional. However, registering a billing address for open-loop (Visa/Mastercard) cards is recommended before using them for online purchases.

The most common reasons are: a purchase you forgot, an inactivity fee (only legal after 12 months of no use under federal law), or a pending authorization hold from a recent transaction. Review your transaction history when you check the balance to identify the specific deductions.

Under the Credit CARD Act of 2009, gift card funds cannot expire for at least five years from the purchase date or the last time value was added. The card itself may have an earlier expiration date, but the issuer must replace it and transfer the balance at no cost to you.

Call the toll-free number on the back of the card. The automated phone system operates independently and is usually available 24/7 even when the website is experiencing issues. For retail gift cards, any cashier at that store can check your balance at the register.
